If you want a light and powerful bike but more maintenance, go for an enduro/motocross to supermoto conversion. Something like 250/300 2stroke or 450/500 4stroke. Ktm, husqvarna, husaberg, beta, fantic, yamaha (yz, yzf), sherco, tm. If you want a reliable but heavy bike then get a 690, 701, older te 500 husqvarnas or something like that.

The ktm is an enduro, for verry technical trailriding, more competition minded. More hardcore. The tenere is a touring bike with quite good performance off-road if you have the right tires. What is different: The Tenere has a wider gear spread — 3.06 compared to 2.60. Below 5,000 rpm, the Tenere has more power. Above 7,500 rpm, the Tuareg has more. Valve adjustment interval is 12,000 miles on the Tuareg vs. 26,000 for the Tenere. Tuareg has a higher compression ratio and requires premium fuel.

in all honesty, if I can commute 30+ miles on a KTM 690 enduro knowing it will be as reliable as a Honda cb500x that would be my go to. Just something about being on a thumper makes it much more fun than being on a road bike and I feel the tenere 700 will fill that gap once it comes out.
